Dear Parents,

This week we are beginning our unit on Caterpillars and Butterflies! Our first graders will be taking flight once they see what is planned for our upcoming week!

Language Arts:

Our story of the week is called The Hungry Caterpillar. It is a story by Eric Carle. This little story is a great jump start to our new unit this week. It is about a caterpillar that begins in an egg. He is then born and goes out on a search for food. Once he is full be spins his cocoon in which he then transforms into a beautiful butterfly. Students will learn the cycle of a butterfly's life as well as vocabulary words (i.e. Transformation, cocoon).

Science:
This is a video that the first graders will be watching this week. The students will be able to watch a complete life cycle of a Monarch butterfly. This video allows them to not only view what happens, but also places their vocabulary words to a picture as well. This will make it easier for them to remember what happens in a butterfly life cycle!

* Also this week we will be getting a new class pet! A lucky parent of ours found a cocoon under their railing and was kind enough to donate it to our class! After Our class learns about the caterpillar transformation through this video we will be taking care of our new friend. Do not worry though, once it is hatched we will be releasing it outside to its natural habitat!

Art:
Our beautiful little caterpillars will also be making their own class caterpillars this week! We will be using items that the hungry caterpillar eats in the book. In groups of four each student will have to work together to create their own caterpillars with the resources that I will be providing. Here is a sample of a caterpillar created by another class:

Have a great week!!
